Ingredients in Valentine Strawberries
- Fresh strawberries – Use the best strawberries you can find. They should be fully red and firm.
- Dairy-free chocolate chips – I recommend using high quality chocolate, such as Nestle or this dairy-free version from Enjoy Life. Although you can use any type of chocolate you’d like. I prefer a mixture of dark and semi-sweet chocolate chips for flavor.
- Sprinkles – Use an assortment of red, pink, and white sprinkles for decorating these Valentine’s Day strawberries. Just make sure they are gluten free, like these.
Measurements for each ingredient, along with instructions for making the Valentine strawberries are in the recipe card below.
How To Make Valentine Strawberries
Step One: Place washed and completely dried strawberries on a plate or wax paper.
Step Two: In a small microwave safe bowl, add the semi-sweet chips. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Remove from the microwave and stir. (This is the same method used in this dairy free fudge.)
Step Three: If large chips remain, place back in the microwave for another 30 seconds. Remove and stir to finish melting.
Step Four: Dip each strawberry into the melted chocolate. Place strawberry on the wax paper.
Step Five: Sprinkle each chocolate-covered strawberry with colored sprinkles. Work quickly as the chocolate will harden.
Step Six: Serve strawberries or save for later.
Note about melting chocolate
You can also melt chocolate in a double boiler! Just fill a saucepan with a few inches of water and place a glass or metal heat-proof bowl on top. Heat water to medium and gently melt the chocolate in the double boiler.
Substitutions
- The recipe uses Nestle Allergen Free chips. Both semi-sweet and dark chocolate chips are used.
- White chocolate wafers or chips may be used, but they aren’t dairy-free.
Variations
- If using small strawberries, you may be able to dip 18 in the chocolate. If you’d like to make more strawberries, double the semi-sweet chips to 8 ounces and the dark chips to 4 ounces.
- Feel free to sprinkle finely chopped nuts or other sprinkles on the strawberries.
- Melt white chocolate chips to add a little contrast. You can also add a little red or pink gel food coloring to make pink chocolate.
- For a cold treat, you can freeze this delicious treat and enjoy them straight from the freezer any time.
Equipment
You don’t need any fancy equipment or tools to make perfect chocolate-covered strawberries! Just grab these common kitchen supplies:
- Plate, wax paper, or parchment paper
- Microwave-safe bowl
- Spoon
Storing Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries
- Chocolate dipped strawberries store well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The chocolate will have the best bite straight from the fridge.
💭Top Tip
Drizzle any leftover chocolate over the strawberries to add extra detail. A little melted white chocolate adds a lovely design to the chocolate coating.
Food Safety
Because they are not cooked, the chocolate dipped strawberries can be stored either at room temperature or in the fridge. They will stay fresh for about 1 day on the counter or up to 3 days in the fridge.
Valentine Strawberries FAQs
The tricky part about dipping fresh fruit in chocolate is making the chocolate actually stick! To do this, the strawberries must be completely dry. The chocolate will not stick to wet strawberries, even if they’re just barely damp.
It’s very important to use room temperature strawberries! Cold strawberries can cause the chocolate to set too fast, which will affect the final appearance. Just rinse the strawberries really well and let them air dry on a kitchen towel for a few hours before dipping. They’ll be ready to dip as soon as they’re dry!
The chocolate on your strawberries will begin to harden whether you leave them at room temperature or put them in the fridge. You’ll be able to speed the hardening process up by placing the strawberries in the fridge for at least 10 minutes.
